Shampooing & Conditioning of Hair

Shampooing & Conditioning of Hair

The main purpose of shampooing is to cleanse the hair of all dirt, oils & cosmetics without harming the hair or the scalp. Thus one should avoid using alkaline shampoos as they tend to make the hair dry & brittle. Hair should be shampooed as often as necessary, depending upon how quickly the scalp & hair get dirty. The accumulation of oil & perspiration along with the dirt offer a breeding place for bacteria & lice etc. So, soft water is best for cleaning the hair. Hard water contains minerals & does not lather properly. It can be softened by a chemical process, boiling or distillation & made suitable for shampooing. Select the shampoo according to the hair condition.
Hair is not considered normal if it has been lightened, toned, tinted, permanently waved or permanent straightening, sun damage, even damaged by improper care or by exposure to the elements.
Brushing the hair is a part of both shampoo & scalp treatments. Brushing stimulates the scalp, helps to remove dust & dirt from the hair & gives it an added sheen. Stimulation of scalp helps to normalize the oil glands. Always brush thoroughly, whether it is dry or oily.
* The water should be as warm as one can stand comfortably.
* Wet hair thoroughly & apply shampoo slowly, little at a time, covering the entire hair.
* Manipulate properly with both hands, using the cushions of your fingers not the tips.
* Allow the head to relax for a short while & resume again until the scalp has been   thoroughly massaged & shampoo spreads through the hair.
* Rinse out thoroughly, 2-3 times, with water.
* Now dry the hair with towel, do not pull them while squeezing out the water.
* Massage the scalp with palms & fingers without applying firm pressure, using a circular motion until the hair is partially dry.

EAT to BEAT "SUN DaMaGe"

We all know one of those lucky women who looks years younger than she really is- and more often than not, it'll be down to good genes, a healthy diet & staying in the shade. But while all of these do help, scientists are now discovering that what we eat can be just as important in helping to ward off the signs of ageing including damage done by the sun. We can reduce its harmful effects & boost our natural sun protection by filling our bodies with anti-oxidants.
Here the Nutrients that can help:
Vitamin C:   Top of your list of essential foods in Summer should be rich in Vitamin C, which is widely thought to be one of the most powerful anti-oxidants around. Vitamin C-rich diet reduces wrinkles, perhaps because of its sun protection properties.
Find it in:     Most fruits & Vegetables are naturally high in vitamin C, but if you want the real booster then go for citrus fruits, berries, black currants, kiwi fruits, guava & Water cress.

Vitamin A:    Another vitamin which you should ensure you get enough of its betacarotene, which the body uses to make vitamin A. One study showed that taking supplements for 10 weeks helped to protect the skin from burning in the sun. However most nutritionists agree that it's better to get this nutrient from food, rather than supplements.
Find it in:     Boost intakes safely by eating plenty of yellow & orange fruits & vegetables. Good sources include pumpkin, carrots, sweet potatoes, mangoes, apricots, broccoli & spinach.

Vitamin E:   A potent anti-oxidant, vitamin E helps neutralize free radicles & protect cell membranes from attack. A research has found that supplementing 268 mg of vitamin E daily appeared to reduce the risk of sun damage to skin cells, & inhibit the production of cancer-causing cells.  However, as with betacarotene, its better to get what you need by eating foods rich in vitamin E, as large doses could be harmful.
Find it in:    Wheat germ, avocados, nuts, seeds, egg yolks & vegetable oils, particularly olive, sunflower, corn & soya oil.

Selenium:   Skin cells containing selenium were less likely to be damaged by free radicles than those low in the mineral.
Find it in:     Brazil nuts provide the recommended daily amount . Other good sources include fish, eggs, lamb, sunflower seeds & oats.

Omega 3 Fats: These play a crucial role in keeping the skin healthy & reducing the damaging effects of sunlight. This is because omega-3 Fats encourage the body to produce anti-inflammatory compounds, which help to slow even & even reverse signs of damage in the skin. In addition, salmon is also rich in compound called DMAE, which is thought to help increase muscle tone & prevent sagging.
Find it in :    Oil rich fish, like sardines, salmon & mackerel, as well as tofu,Kale & walnuts.

Q.4: A: What are the best Home Care Hair Remedies? B: How to detect, the type of Hair, a carrier has?

A:  As we all know that lovely shinning hair is not only beauty but dream of a woman. It is precious & deserves good care. First, of all we all should know what type of hair we have, there are normal, greasy, dry & greasy scalp + dry hair.

NORMAL HAIR
It is shiny yet not greasy, & fairly easy to manage. Although, it may fly about a little the day after a set, but it soon settles down & stays looking good for about a week before it becomes slightly sticky to the touch & dirty-looking.
REMEDIES:
  1. Wash once/twice a week with a mild shampoo. Do not use shampoos which contain harsh detergents to produce the frothy lather, as these can often strip the natural sebum from the hair & spoil its condition. Select a herbal shampoo, if possible.
  • I recommend Cat walk’s Oatmeal Honey Shampoo, Moisture maniac Sh of Bed Head.
  1. Apply egg yolk, mixing 2 egg yolks with a cup of luke warm water & beat together. Massage into the scalp, then cover the head with plastic cap & leave it                              for ten mins. After that, rinse your hair thoroughly with Luke warm water, & then shampoo it.

DRY HAIR:
This type of hair is difficult to control after shampooing, & it looks dull & has ends that are dry & split. Even just before shampooing, the ends look dry. The scalp sometimes feels itchy.
REMEDIES:
1.      Wash once a week with a cream shampoo, & apply a conditioner afterwards. Remember to rinse the conditioner off very thoroughly to avoid stickiness.
2.      Warm a cupful of olive oil massage into the hair lightly. Cover the hair with a warmed towel, wrapped like a turban & leave the olive oil conditioner on for ½ an hr, then rinse with shampoo in the normal way.
3.      Stimulate the flow of sebum & blood to the hair follicles with a do-it-yourself scalp massage. Massage firmly but gently, moving the scalp not fingers.
4.      Try to take high protein diet & it includes the vegetable oils.

GREASY HAIR:
It looks good for a day or two after shampooing, but then quickly becomes limp. Groups of hair cling together in unattractive strands & scalp feels dirty.
REMEDIES:
1.      Wash it often, like 3 times a week preferably, just before it starts looking lovely & feeling sticky. As Greasy Hair can cause spots that appear on face & back.
2.      Choose a lemon based shampoo. Rinse very thoroughly, & add little vinegar to the final rinsing water to leave the hair squeaking clean.
3.      Pay good attention to diet. Avoid fatty & fried foods & sweets. Increase in-take of protein rich foods.
4.      Drink plenty of water.
5.      Try to relax more & do outdoor exercise.

GREASY DRY HAIR:
In case of fairly long hair, the hair nearest the scalp is greasy while the ends are dry. Just after the shampooing, the hair looks good, except the ends. This type of hair seems difficult to set smoothly & looks split & lighter in color than the roots.
REMEDIES:
1.      Wash as soon as the scalp feels itchy, but use a very mild shampoo & never rub shampoo into the dry ends.
2.      Use conditioner on lengths & ends only, never apply conditioner on the scalp.
3.      Have the dry ends trimmed regularly.
4.      Keep your scalp clean between shampoos, the best tip is –dab a piece of cologne soaked cotton wool into the scalp by making partings all over head.

Q.3: A- What happens when Dandruff is neglected? B- How to cure Dandruff with herbal Treatments?

Q.3: A- What happens when Dandruff is neglected?
B- How to cure Dandruff with herbal Treatments?

A-            Dandruff  is one of the major disorders of the scalp and is also known by the medical term pityriasis. Just as the skin is being shed & replaced, in a similar way the uppermost layer of the scalp is being continuously cast off. This shedding of  scales is called Dandruff.
Remember dandruff if neglected for a long time leads to baldness. A direct cause of dandruff is excessive shedding of the scales. Instead of falling off, the horny scales accumulate on the scalp. Poor hygiene, improper diet, sluggish condition of the scalp caused by poor blood circulation are the main causes of Dandruff.

B-            As Dandruff, a scaly condition of the scalp is caused by Hair follicle becoming blocked with excess sebum, is also caused due to oily skin & acne.  Some of the remedies which can tried are:
  1. Mix 2 tb spoon of cosmetic vinegar in 6tb spoons of hot water. Dab with cotton into the scalp, parting the hair with comb. It should preferably be used at bed time. Tie a scarf over the hair to avoid staining the pillow. Next morning, shampoo the hair. After the hair is thoroughly cleansed, pour over as a last rinse again a mixture of 3 tb spoons of cosmetic vinegar & 1 cup of hot water. This should be done twice a week for three months.
  2. Apple juice tonic helps in curing Dandruff. To prepare the tonic, mix together 1 tb spoon of  pure apple juice & 3 tb spoons water & massage into the scalp, three times a week. This recipe helps to fight dandruff.
  3. Rosemary & Borax lotion are too useful products to cure this too. Mix 5 tb spoons of strong Rosemary infusion with a pinch of borax & massage into the scalp daily.

Always keep in mind that Hair reflects one’s general health. Tension, Over-work, Stress & Anxiety sometimes causes dandruff. Wash the hair everyday using a mild baby shampoo then rinse the scalp with warm water, adding to it 1 tb spoon of Cider vinegar.

4. Application of Hair sprays, setting lotions which leave a dulling film on the shaft.

SOLUTION:
1. Always use a protein-based hair conditioner.

What is better, Brushing or Combing???

Many of my clients, ask this question.. What is better,"Brushing or Combing"???????

Brushing is less damaging than combing, especially avoid using comb having sharp teeth & care should be taken that the selected brush ends are rounded to minimize mechanical damage to the hair,as Nylon brushes with spiky ends also damage the hair.

Wet hair should never be Combed  or Brushed either as it sticks together and a greater force is required to comb/brush it causing undue damage to the hair.

Always keep in mind that a prolonged brushing also harms the hair considerably, thus resulting in split ends.

Q:1- What is Scalp and Composition of Hair

Actually scalp is nothing but the skin on the head, which is similar to the body skin. The scalp like the skin elsewhere in the body consists of two layers--- the dermis and the epidermis. However, larger and deeper hair follicles are present on the scalp to accomodate the longer hair of the head.

Now let me share the most essential info about The Hair Composition:
The Chemical Composition of Hair is:
                                            Carbon: 50.56%
                                           Hydrogen:  6.38%
                                           Nitrogen: 17.14%
                                             Sulphur:  5.00%
                                             Oxygen:20.85%
This Composition varies with color of the hair. The Hair is also composed of a protein called "Keratin".
Full grown Hair is divided into two parts - the root and the Shaft.
The rate of hair growth varies from person to person. The average growth of hair is approximately 1/4 inch/month i.e, 1/16 inch /week. The growth of Hair is always greater between the ages of 20 and 30yrs & faster in summer than in winter. The growth of hair is cyclical, i.e after a few years of growth , the hair enters a phase of inactivity, then dies & falls. A hair dies when its bulb is separated from the papilla that feeds it. The hair bulb is a thickened club-shaped structure forming the lower part of the hair root.
